Suspicious Android Apps on Google Play Store Stealing Data: Pakistani Officials at Risk

In a recent cyber security advisory, the Cabinet Division has warned of suspicious Android apps available on the Google Play Store, specifically targeting Pakistani officials. These malicious apps, designed by ITAppCoding (itappcoding28@gmail.com), are notorious for stealing personal and financial data without user consent.

Identified suspicious Android apps include ISSB App for Armed Forces, Initial Test Preparation, Intelligence Mcqs Test, Pak eServices 2024, Electricity Bill Checker, Sui Gas Bill Viewer, Online Shopping Pakistan, All Sim Packages, and Bike Services. These apps exploit users by extracting media files, contact lists, calendar entries, and call/message logs. Some even offer personal identifiable information (PII) of Pakistani citizens for a fee.

The advisory emphasizes the need for caution. Users are urged to avoid downloading apps from unknown sources or third-party hosting sites and to rely solely on the Google Play Store. Checking app reviews and privacy policies before downloading is crucial to prevent data theft. Additionally, the advisory highlights the importance of regularly reviewing app permissions, changing phones if suspicious activity is detected, and enabling Google Play Protect.

Further recommendations include reading privacy policies to understand data collection and sharing practices, avoiding emails and attachments from unknown sources, updating phone software promptly, avoiding storing official data on smartphones, and turning off location services when not needed.

To safeguard against these threats, users are advised to use strong passwords and install reputable antivirus and anti-malware software. Staying vigilant and adhering to these guidelines can help protect personal and professional data from being compromised by these malicious apps.

Stay informed and proactive to reduce the risk of data breaches and cyber threats. Protect your information by following these essential security measures.
